The Philosophy of Slow Luxury

Time is the most valuable material I work with. Leather can be replaced, hardware can be remade, but time is something that can never be rushed. Every Van Zyl handbag is individually hand-cut, hand-skived and entirely hand saddle stitched by me using traditional techniques that have been passed down through generations of artisans. I have chosen to create no more than forty-eight handbags each year because I believe every commission deserves my complete attention. Each Nicole and Lynn leaves my atelier individually numbered, not simply as a handbag, but as a personal commission created to be carried, cherished and one day passed from one generation to the next.

I have chosen not to create handbags for inventory. Instead, every Van Zyl handbag is individually handcrafted in my atelier only after it has been commissioned, allowing me to dedicate the time, care and craftsmanship each piece truly deserves.

Every handbag I create is a reflection of my dedication to traditional craftsmanship. From the first cut of leather to the final hand saddle stitch, I take the time to ensure that every detail is considered with patience, precision and care. While I honour centuries-old leatherworking techniques, I also enjoy bringing my own architectural design language to each collection, creating handbags that are both timeless and unmistakably Van Zyl. For me, true luxury is found not only in the finished handbag, but in the experience of commissioning something created especially for you.
